Italian courses for international students

热那亚大学国际学生意大利语言与文化学院

The Project "Corsi di italiano per studenti internazionali" promotes the inclusion of international students in Italian university activities and social life.
The Italian language and culture teaching activities are aimed at:

  • students with foreign qualifications  enrolled  at the University  of  Genoa in bachelor,  master  and doctoral degree programs;

  • foreign students who  attend  our  Athenaeum  as part  of  international student mobility  (Erasmus+, Cinda, etc.).

Foreign students on international mobility find information in this page

Students with foreign degrees enrolled in English-language master's or doctoral programs find information in this page

Students with foreign qualifications enrolled in University of Genoa bachelor's and master's degree programs taught in Italian must take a test of Italian language proficiency.

Italian language proficiency test: freshmen (enrolled for the first time in a.y. 2023/24)

  • Students with foreign degrees enrolling in English language degree programs do not have to take the test.

  •  The test is designed to ascertain the level of Italian language proficiency required for degree programs at the University of Genoa. This level must be equal to B2 (B1 for Marco Polo Project students); only students who intend to enroll in a Master's degree program of the Department of Modern Languages must demonstrate at least C1 level.

  • Those who reach the A2 level in the test will be able to enroll at the University of Genoa but will have a formative debt in the study plan (OFA) and will have to take free Italian courses organized by the University of Genoa to reach the required B2 level of Italian proficiency; the courses are reserved for students enrolled in the first year, not in years after the first, and can be accessed only by students who did not pass the test in the fall session (September - November 2023). There are no Italian courses for students who do not pass the test in subsequent sessions.

  • Those who do not reach the A2 level will not be able to enroll in any degree program at the University of Genoa.

  • Students can take the Italian language proficiency test only once. It cannot be repeated on another date.

  • Those who hold an Italian language proficiency certification of no less than B2 level (B1 for Chinese students in the Marco Polo Program) and obtained as of January 2021, do not have to take the Italian language proficiency test.

The University of Genoa only considers valid the language certifications issued by:University for Foreigners of Siena, University for Foreigners of Perugia, University Roma Tre, "Dante Alighieri" Society, University for Foreigners "Dante Alighieri of Reggio Calabria."

Those who hold one of these certifications, obtained from January 2021 onward, must send it to the Welcome Office Sector on the dates indicated:

  • by August 21, to take the test on September 14 or 15, 2023;

  • by September 25, to take the test on October 13, 2023;

  • by November 10, to take the test on November 24, 2023.

Italian language proficiency test: enrolled in years prior to a.y. 2023/24

Students enrolled for the first time in the a.y. 2020/21 and 2021/22, who hold one of the certifications listed, must send it to Welcome Office Sector by Sept. 10, if they take the Sept. 29, 2023 test.

Italian certifications are accepted only for students enrolled for the first time starting from a.y. 2020/2021.

Students from previous years who have Italian educational debt (OFA) in the curriculum can see an example of what the test looks like by clicking here.

Instructions: from question 1 to question 8, you have to complete the sentences, choosing from 4 possible options (here, in the test example, we have given you in parentheses the infinitive verbs to be conjugated in the required mode and time). In question 9, you must indicate the correct word that completes the text, choosing from 4 possible options (here, in the test example, we have indicated to you in parentheses the 4 options from which you must choose the correct one).

To prepare for taking the test, you can follow the directions in the Syllabus.

Italian Language Courses

Italian language courses are reserved for students who have taken the September 14 and 15, October 13 or November 24, 2023 test and have reached level A2 (but not B2). These courses include face-to-face classes with an in-person and/or distance lecturer.

Students who enroll at the University of Genoa after December 1, 2023 can take online Italian courses in self-study (without a lecturer).

The test takes place in the fall session (September - November 2023) to ascertain your level of Italian proficiency and can only be taken once by pre-registered or first-time matriculated students.

Students in the years following the first year who have not yet passed the test may retake it until they pass it in the manner of previous years.

To take college courses, your Italian language proficiency must be level:

  • B1, if you are a Chinese Marco Polo project student enrolling in a bachelor's degree program

  • B2, for all other students

  • C1, if you are enrolled in a master's degree program in the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures

The Language Skills Development Department will send each student an email with instructions on how to register for the Italian test and how to take it.

Italian language course

If you have achieved A2 level, but have not obtained B2, you will be placed in Italian courses whose duration will depend on the score you obtained in the test.

The courses are reserved for those enrolled in the first year who have been found eligible for A2 level but not B2 in one of the tests of the fall session (September - November).  Students who enroll at the University of Genoa after December 20, 2023 will not be placed in any Italian courses with faculty.

Students enrolled in the first year as repeaters will not be placed in any Italian courses.

Students who, in the Italian language proficiency test, have not reached at least the A2 level will not be allowed to enroll and therefore will not be placed in any course.

Course attendance is mandatory and you must attend at least 50 percent of the hours of your course in order to be admitted to the final test.

At the end of the courses you will have to take a new test to check your knowledge of Italian.
If you do not pass the test at the end of the course, you can try it again until the deadline for filling out your second-year syllabus.

If you fail it, you will be able to complete the first-year exams, but you will not be able to fill out the syllabus for the second year, because you will still have Italian educational debt: you will then have to enroll in the first year as a repeat student.
