Foreign students

Sass (Foreign Students’ Accommodation Service)

I) Students registered with the Servizio Attività internazionali (International Activities Office) will be contacted by Sass via e-mail and will be provided with useful information about accommodation (location, number of rooms, room/flat rent, and other information). Students will receive information, pictures and extensive documentation about available accommodation, via e-mail. After arrival in Genoa, they will be taken to visit available accommodation options and will be assisted in signing the tenancy agreement.

Students who made an explicit request for temporary accommodation on their application form will be lodged at the Ostello della Gioventù (Passo Costanzi 10, tel.00390102422457, fax: 0039010242257, www.ostellogenova.it, e-mail: hostelge@iol.it).
The University of Genoa will pay for up to four nights at the hostel. Students who wish to prolong their stay at the hostel will have to pay for any additional nights.
One night at the hostel (breakfast included) costs about 16.50 euros. The hostel is closed from December 20 to January 31.

II) After enrolling at the University of Genoa, foreign students will have to contact the Sass office in person to get information about the following necessary documents:
- fiscal code (i.e. social security number),
- registration statement from the Registry office (for European students only),
- residence permit (for non-European students only).

Fiscal code
It is issued by the local Agenzia delle Entrate (Revenue office) upon presentation of the following:
a. non-European students: valid passport and visa (if necessary) or residence permit;
b. European students: valid identity document.

The Sass has all the forms that you need to apply for a fiscal code and will help you fill the application forms.

III) As of April 11, European students who wish to stay in Italy are no longer required to apply for a residence permit. However, after 3 months after arrival in Italy, European students are required to register with the local Registry office.
European students who are going to stay in Italy for less then 3 months do not need any such document.
To register with the Registry office, you need:
- an enrolment certificate from the University of Genoa,
- proof of sufficient financial resources: a photocopy of your credit card or of your bank account statement,
- health insurance: there are various alternative forms: E106/E109/E120/E121/E33/E37.
According to the European regulation, the European Health Card doesn’t constitute valid proof of health insurance.
A valid private health insurance coverage will also be accepted. You can take out for example an INA Assitalia insurance policy at any post office (INA-ASSITALIA Conto n. 71270003, addressed to INA-ASSITALIA Agenzia Generale di Roma c. n. 20. Give your name, surname and Italian address. The insurance covers the cost of emergency medical treatment and hospitalization. It costs about 49 euros for a six-month coverage and 98 euros for a full-year coverage).
- a residence permit (non-European students only): it can be obtained by filling in the relevant form (yellow kit), which is available at any postal office.
Sass will help foreign students with filling in and submitting the application form.
