Il National Institute of Health (NIH) americano offre diversi finanziamenti nel campo della ricerca medica, attraverso i bandi riportati nel seguito. E’ consigliato, per i proponenti non americani far risaltare come il progetto proposta sia di rilevante importanza per gli obiettivi del NIH e dei sui centri (IC) e come porterà ad un miglioramento delle scienze mediche negli Stati Uniti.
ATTENZIONE: Le proposte di progetto devono essere presentate on-line attraverso il sito Grants.gov e, dato che tale procedura prevede l’inserimento di credenziali ufficiali dell’Ente, gli interessati sono invitati a contattare l’Ufficio scrivente prima di procedere alla singola Application.
TIPOLOGIE DI PROGETTI - NOTA BENE
Per alcune delle call sotto riportate è possibile presentare, per la stessa tematica, 2 o 3 diverse tipologie di progetti di ricerca (chiamati “R01”, “R03”, “R21”) a seconda del loro approccio sperimentale, preliminare o di sviluppo.
I progetti del tipo “R01” (http://grants.nih.gov/grants/funding/r01.htm) sono circoscritti su tematiche specifiche. I progetti dovranno tener conto delle aree di interesse di uno o più Istituti/Centri appartenenti all’NIH, reperibili al link: http://www.nih.gov/icd
I progetti del tipo “R03” (http://grants.nih.gov/grants/funding/r03.htm) riguardano il finanziamento di piccoli progetti di ricerca, quali ad esempio: studi pilota o di fattibilità; analisi di dati esistenti; sviluppo di metodologie e/o di nuove tecnologie di ricerca). Essi saranno articolati su un breve periodo di tempo e con limitate risorse finanziarie. Anche per questa tipologia è fortemente consigliato di mettersi in contatto con l’Istituto/Centro americano appartenente all’NIH che partecipa alla call di interesse.
I progetti del tipo “R21” (http://grants.nih.gov/grants/funding/r21.htm) riguardano studi esplorativi ad elevato rischio/elevato impatto, su argomenti per i quali manchino dati preliminari e che sviluppino nuove idee o nuovi modelli di sistemi, strumenti o tecnologie scientifiche atti a portare a un significativo aumento delle conoscenze o dello stato della ricerca nel campo della salute.

“ASTHMA IN OLDER ADULTS”
TEMATICHE: “to study the pathophysiology, epidemiology, diagnosis, and/or management of asthma in older adults. Much of what is known about asthma in adults is based on studies in younger adult populations; however, the mechanisms underlying asthma in some older adults may differ, which may impact on diagnostic, treatment, and prevention strategies. This call is intended to stimulate research to address knowledge gaps and research opportunities in asthma in later life. A variety of study approaches are encouraged with this call including basic, translational, clinical, and epidemiological studies. “TRANSLATIONAL RESEARCH FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF NOVEL INTERVENTIONS FOR MENTAL DISORDERS”
TEMATICHE: “to speed the translation of emerging findings on the neuroscience of mental disorders into novel intervention approaches that will ultimately reduce symptoms and/or restore function. This call provides support for up to two years (R21 phase) for preliminary, proof-of-principle studies in human participants, followed by up to 3 years of support (R33 phase) for pilot studies to assess the implementation of the intervention, and evaluate the feasibility of conducting a larger trial to assess the efficacy of the intervention. A range of non-pharmacologic treatment approaches will be accepted, including those based on neurophysiological, cognitive, affective, and/or social neuroscience models, basic behavioral science, and neurodevelopmental models. Applications submitted in response to this call must involve novel treatment targets, and/or novel and highly innovative approaches to engage and modify known targets.”

“GENETIC SCREENS TO ENHANCE ZEBRAFISH RESEARCH”
TEMATICHE: “to exploit the power of the zebrafish as a vertebrate model for biomedical and behavioral research. Applications proposing to develop new genetic screens of high priority to the zebrafish community that will advance the detection and characterization of genes, pathways, and phenotypes of interest in development and aging, organ formation, neural processes, behavior, sensory processes, physiological processes, and disease processes are welcome.
